Take 5: Top tips to engage pupils

Connected asked a 14-year-old pupil how he likes to learn. His answers could help you to motivate your pupils at the start of the new session.

What better way is there to find out what makes pupils tick than to ask them? Here, one pupil reveals how teachers help him to keep focused.

1 Keep them busy

I like to learn by doing activities because it keeps you interested and it's more stimulating than working in silence.

2 Give pupils a voice

Group discussions are a great way to maintain my attention. I enjoy working with my classmates and it's better than just writing all the time.

3 Let them take responsibility

It makes me feel confident when I can take responsibility for my learning and get involved in setting some of the class rules.

4 Be media savvy

Using computers, listening to music and watching videos helps me to learn and the best lessons always incorporate them.

5 Make it real

It's easier to understand the value of lessons that are linked to the world around me and help me to understand what life after school will be like.
